Rogers says maintenance update caused network outage

Rogers Communications President and CEO, Tony Staffieri, put out a message to customers on Saturday afternoon with an update about Friday's nationwide outage.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., Staffieri said that the company's "networks and systems are close to fully operational." He added that Rogers' technical staff are continuing to monitor the system for any ongoing issues.

"We now believe we’ve narrowed the cause to a network system failure following a maintenance update in our core network," the message said. The update is believed to have caused some of the telecommunications company's routers to malfunction early Friday morning.

"We disconnected the specific equipment and redirected traffic, which allowed our network and services to come back online over time as we managed traffic volumes returning to normal levels," Staffieri said.

Rogers has vowed to make any necessary changes to their networks in an effort to prevent another black-out from occurring in the future. The entire message can be found here.

Rogers has also promised a credit to all customers affected by the outage. It will be automatically applied to said customers' accounts with no action required.

Rogers has already had to advise the public of a text scam surrounding the credit.
