Blenheim killer sentenced to nine years behind bars

A Chatham judge has handed down a nine year sentence for a man who shot and killed another man in Blenheim last year.

Chad Coupe, 20, was originally charged with second degree murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Friday for killing Braedon Burk, 20, in Blenheim 15 months ago.

Judge Gerri Wong gave Coupe enhanced credit for time he has already served at the Windsor Jail, which means he has roughly seven years left to serve on the sentence imposed on Monday.

Coupe was also given four years in jail for an armed robbery in Windsor just days before he shot Burk after an argument on April, 21, 2021.

He is also banned from owning weapons for life and must provide a DNA sample.

Coupe was also ordered not to communicate with several other people, including co-accused Darius White, who will be in court to address the Blenheim shooting in October.

As she handed down the sentence in a Chatham courtroom, Justice Wong said Coupe showed remorse and is willing to get help and that's how she arrived at nine years.

"I understand that this will not be the sentence that many of the family and loved ones want or feel is enough. I do not want you to think that your views are being ignored. The court cannot compensate you, I can not do anything further to compensate you for your loss and the sentence that I impose is never going to be enough and I understand that. It will never return Braedon," said Judge Wong.

Wong also said she took into account Coupe's high-risk behaviour and the irrepairable damage he caused the Burk family.
