Maroons collecting donated coats before Sunday's game

The Chatham Maroons are once again jumping on board with a local coat and winter clothing drive.

The Maroons will be hosting their "Operation Cover Up Night" on Sunday and they're asking fans to participate by bringing new or gently used Winter Coats to the game at Memorial Arena.

The Maroons will be facing the Sarnia Legionnaires with puck drop set for 7 p.m. Sunday.

Volunteers will be at the game, collecting the donated coats in the main lobby of the arena.

“Hockey Fans everywhere dress warmly when they attend a game to cheer on their Home team," said a release from the Maroons. "How can we turn a blind eye to the fact that there are those less fortunate in Chatham-Kent that can't afford a warm winter coat for themselves or their children?"

This year, the team is asking you to consider donating children's coats and men's plus-size coats because they are especially needed.

The Salvation Army's "Operation Cover Up" campaign will also continue after the game, right through to October 28, 2022.

You can drop off donations for that at the Salvation Army Church on Orangewood Boulevard in Chatham or at the Salvation Army Thrift Stores in Chatham, Wallaceburg, and Ridgetown. Jiffy Lube on Keil Drive in Chatham will also be accepting donations for the program.

The donated coats will then be sorted out and distributed from November 2 to 4 at the Salvation Army Church in Chatham, its thrift stores in Wallaceburg and Ridgetown, and the Tilbury Information and Help Centre.
