Salvation Army Captain passes away

One of the leaders of the Chatham-Kent Salvation Army has died following a three-year battle with brain cancer.

Major Karen Holland passed away at the Chatham-Kent Hospice surrounded by family on Friday, February 3. She was 60.

In September 2019, Karen was diagnosed with grade III anaplastic astrocytoma, a rare form of malignant brain cancer that occurs in the cells and tissues that protect the brain's neurons.

Karen took a step back from her duties with the Salvation Army as she underwent three brain surgeries and numerous chemotherapy treatments.

Karen and her husband of 30 years, Major Stephen Holland, moved to Chatham-Kent from St. Catharines in July 2017.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 7 at the Salvation Army Chatham-Kent Ministries at 46 Orangewood Boulevard in Chatham. It will begin at 10 a.m.

The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. and the service will be live-streamed on the church's YouTube channel. Online condolences can be left at www.cooperfuneralhome.ca.

Donations in Karen's memory can be made to the Chatham Kent Hospice or the Salvation Army Chatham-Kent Ministries.
