Sci-fi fantasy buffs invited to Chatham author's book launch

Local writer Brian Knowler, who writes under the pen name J.B. Knowles, has released a new sci-fi fantasy book that will have its official launch at Turns & Tales later this month.

Oathtaker: Broken tells the story of Elven Katya Greenleaf, who took a blood oath to hunt down and eliminate all forms of evil. "Broken" is the first book in the "Oathtaker" series, which Knowles has planned as a trilogy.

Knowles conjured up the main character and her family while he was in high school. He says the story has stayed in the back of his mind for years as he pursued a career in law enforcement. It was during the COVID-19 pandemic Knowles finally had the chance to put his ideas down on paper.

"With some time and inspiration, I was able to find the time to breathe new life into these characters and their adventures that I’d been creating in my head for over thirty years,” said Knowles. “Once I sat down and started writing, the words just flowed onto the page non-stop. I’m so excited to share this book with the world.”

Turns & Tales, a book store and café in downtown Chatham, is hosting the book launch on May 18. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and is free to all.

“We have active sci fi, fantasy, Dungeons & Dragons and cosplay communities that meet here regularly,” says Rachel Wilton, café team leader at Turns & Tales. “When J.B. shared more details about his book, a lightbulb went off in our head about how we could combine J.B.’s book theme with similar groups already sharing their interests here and make it an even more fun event for everyone.”

Per usual, guests can expect a talk from the author, signings, and a public reception at the book launch. However, thanks to the enthusiasm and creativity of Turns & Tales staff, the event will also feature story-themed snacks and beverages - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.

"The staff at Turns & Tales have been amazing since hearing about my book. They’re so supportive of local authors and they’re also big supporters of cosplayers in our community," said Knowles. "I’m thrilled to be able to combine my interests in cosplay and fantasy, my book, and launching Katya Greenleaf and her 2SLGBTQIA+ story into the world. And I’m looking forward to seeing what types of costumes and outfits people wear to the event!”

Oathtaker: Broken is available in hard copy form at Turns & Tales and online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Indigo, and iBooks in both print and electronic formats.
