Another deadly long weekend on OPP-patrolled roads

The Ontario Provincial Police once again urge drivers to slow down, wear a seatbelt, and pay attention after four people lost their lives in separate crashes over the long Thanksgiving Weekend.

The OPP increases enforcement every long weekend and has released the results of Operation Impact for last weekend.

"Speeding was the most prevalent traffic violation," it said in a release.

Police officers laid 7,953 charges over three days, with 4,829 of those for speeding. Another 86 drivers were cited for stunt driving or street racing, while 131 were for impaired driving.

Officers charged 283 seatbelt charges, noting drivers and passengers faced fines.

"Traffic laws are designed to prevent collisions, injuries, and fatalities," the OPP reminded drivers. "They are only effective if drivers comply with them."

Police also reported one boater was killed on the waterways it patrols.
