House fire in Chatham causes $200K in damage

Damage to a house in Chatham is pegged at $200,000 after a fire late Friday night.

On Monday morning, Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services reported fire crews found smoke showing and a fire in the basement at 93 Moonstone Crescent when they arrived at around 11:15 p.m.

Firefighters quickly got the fire under control and extinguished the fire and there was no damage to neighbouring homes, noted Assistant Fire Chief Ken Labonte.

Labonte said four people were displaced due to the fire, but nobody was hurt.

The cause of the fire is being listed as accidental. However, CK Fire is asking residents to consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell, and feel like real candles.

"If you do use lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily and always blow out candles when you leave a room or home, or when you go to bed," said Labonte.
