Several events are taking place in downtown Chatham this weekend to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.
It starts with a flag raising and a walk along King Street West at noon on Friday. Anyone attending can wear red to show their support (shirts, coats, pins, but not red dresses).
That will be followed by an opening and displaying of Red Dresses at 495 King St. W. as a visual reminder of the staggering number of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.
There will also be a lunch and a ceremony for the lighting of the Sacred Fire Friday afternoon.
On Saturday, there are a pair of drop-in and visit times where they will be serving Bannock and Tea at the Deshkan Ziibi Indigenous Hub (495 King St. W.).
And on Sunday evening, which is also officially recognized as Red Dress Day, there will be a drumming ceremony and a sharing time at Deshkan Ziibi.
