Fraud suspect has second thoughts after jumping into McGregor Creek

A fraud investigation quickly turned into a water rescue in Chatham after the suspect allegedly jumped into the McGregor Creek.

Police said an officer tried to stop the man to speak with him on King Street East in Chatham at around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday after he was identified as a suspect in a case where a stolen credit card had been used at a local business earlier that same morning.

At that point, the man allegedly took off running and then jumped into the river in an attempt to escape, but then panicked and had to be pulled from the water by the officer.

Police said the man was taken into custody and charged with unauthorized credit card use before he was released with conditions and a future court date.
