Grant helps mental health group to help others

The Family Respite Program is feeling the love from a grant courtesy of Women United.

The program offered by Linck Child, Youth & Family Supports, and Family Service Kent helps families and caregivers of children and youth affected by mental health challenges.

"We know there is a critical need for respite opportunities in Chatham-Kent," said Carol Moore Linck's Director of Service for Mental Health. "This funding will allow us to sustain our support to families. We provide opportunities and support to approximately 60 children and their families each year. The $15,000 provided by Women United will fill a need that is growing in our community."

The Family Respite Program offers support to caregivers of children affected by mental health challenges, by giving them the time for some much-needed rest.

The program provides opportunities for their children to participate in camps, therapeutic recreation, and extracurricular activities, giving them a chance to enjoy being kids.

"I'm heartened to see the tangible impact of our collective efforts in addressing the pressing mental health needs of our community," Public Health Educator and Mental Health Table Facilitator Cathy de Bresser Knowler said. "With rates of anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders on the rise, the importance of respite programs cannot be overstated. This grant only sustains vital supports for families and symbolizes our ongoing dedication to fostering resilience and well-being for all."

It is estimated that caregivers of affected children provide an additional 100 hours of care every year, and miss more work time than other caregivers.

Women United, the provider of the grant money, is made up of passionate women in Chatham-Kent who dedicate their time to addressing the needs facing women and their families in the region. Recent projects also include funding the Be Safe app, another mental health initiative.
