Recovery efforts continue for McNaughton Ave. fire victims

Residents of 99 McNaughton Avenue West are facing months outside of their homes and the municipality said it has "all hands on deck" trying to help.

Dozens of tenants were displaced in August, when a fire ripped through the housing complex.

Since the fire, 90 tenants have received emergency accommodations at hotels or the Emergency Evacuation Centre that was established with the support of the Canadian Red Cross, Chatham-Kent's Housing Services said. Other residents have been able to stay with friends or family, the municipality added.

"We have made excellent progress in getting displaced residents into longer-term accommodations, and continue to secure more spots every day," Director of Housing Services Josh Myers noted.

Of those longer-term accommodations, the municipality said 22 tenants have been placed in local retirement facilities, seven tenants have secured leases with private landlords, and five more are scheduled to sign leases in the coming days.

"Our teams in Employment and Social Services and Housing Services continue to work together to ensure that all our residents are being taken care of and are pushing forward to get everyone into secure housing until return to 99 McNaughton is possible," Myers said. "I would also like thank everyone in our community who took the time to donate to those in need; it was an excellent reflection of how caring and generous the people of Chatham-Kent can be."

Re-entry into the housing complex will be a phased-in process, but so far there is no information about how or when that will start.

Restoration clean-up has started inside the building and as of Monday, the municipality has confirmed that it doesn't look like any parts of the building will need to be demolished.

On person has been arrested and faces arson charges in connection with the fire. Police continue to search for a second suspect.

Donations are still being accepted for those who've been displaced by the fire. Click here for details.
