Provincial police are urging drivers to slow down and drive carefully as they respond to several crashes on icy roads Thursday morning.
Sergeant Ed Sanchuk with the West Region OPP headquarters said as of 8 a.m. Thursday, OPP officers in southwestern Ontario had been called to at least 14 collisions and counting.
He said the collisions were being reported across various communities but included incidents on Highway 401 and Highway 402.
One of those incidents involved a jackknifed tractor-trailer on westbound Highway 402 that prompted police to shut down the westbound lanes of that highway at the Highway 401 split just after Wellington Road.
"I'm not aware of any significant injuries, or injuries at all, but some communities are experiencing whiteout conditions and extremely icy roads," said Sanchuk. "Please make sure that you are putting your safety as a priority each and every time you get behind the wheel."
Environment Canada issued a flash freeze warning for a large part of southwestern Ontario Thursday morning, warning of icy and slippery conditions as the temperature drops well below the freezing mark.
Strong wind gusts are also contributing to the poor road conditions with blowing snow being reported across the region.
Forecasters are also warning that walkways and parking lots could become icy, slippery, and hazardous.
