Military Heritage Day coming to Chatham airport

Saturday will be a busy day at the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport.

Organizers of CK's Military Heritage Day are set to welcome vintage military vehicles, exhibits, speakers, food vendors and more.

There will be a salute to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands, which occurred in May.

Eleven members of the Legion's Chatham Branch 642 Pipes and Drums attended the ceremony overseas last month, playing in the Liberation Day parade and at a separate ceremony at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery. Marking the truly special bond between the two countries.

There will also be a First World War reenactment group participating in the festivities.

Over a dozen military planes from 1940 to 1970 will be on display. Titled the Timmermans Legends of Flight, they come from the private collection of vintage aircraft owned by Peter and Annie Timmerman.

Tim Gillies, a local military historian with an active interest in the World Wars, will be featured as a guest speaker. Presentations will be made hourly from noon to the end of the day's festivities.

Gillies also operates a First World War historical group that will be one of Saturday's displays.

Military Heritage Day will go from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with opening ceremonies taking place at 10:30 a.m.

Children under the age of 10 get in free. Tickets for those 10-18 cost $5, while adults pay $10.

Proceeds of the day will be split between the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation and the Blenheim Military Museum.
