Coatsworth bulk water station could get new life

The Coatsworth bulk water station could remain open after some users fought to keep it operational.

On Thursday afternoon, the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC) voted to reconsider closing the station and decided to keep it open by a vote of 6-0.

Some users cited the extra cost to go to nearby stations to get their water, while others said traveling to nearby stations in Merlin, Tilbury, and Chatham is inconvenient.

Melissa Cook told CK PUC the extra cost to get water delivery is undesirable.

"One resident determined that custom water delivery would be $350 for 5,000 gallons of water, which would be extremely expensive over the course of a year for someone relying on water for their daily needs.," said Cook.

Marissa Lamarsh lives near the Coatsworth station and considers it a reliable source of water for her family.

"The proximity of the Coatsworth station to our home has allowed us to efficiently haul water to our well, which serves as our primary source of water. The proposed closure will not only cause significant inconvenience, but also result in increased costs for our family," Lamarsh said.

The station was slated to permanently close in October because of low usage and revenues.

The final decision is up to Chatham-Kent Council.
