If you're hitting the road this week, expect to see a lot of law enforcement patrolling the highways.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be out in force as people travel to celebrate Canada's birthday. This includes those whose plans may involve visiting the U.S. for its 250th birthday over the July Fourth weekend.

This week, there will be additional patrols looking for drivers who commit the so-called "big four" offences, which are aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving, and driving without a seatbelt.

"This year, 164 people have died in collisions on OPP-patrolled roads," read a release from the OPP. "The public can expect to see an increased OPP presence across the province, with officers actively targeting dangerous driving behaviours during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year."

The OPP say that the responsibility to travel safely also applies to off-roaders, boaters, and paddlers.

"Accidents can happen at any moment, but wearing the right gear, like a lifejacket or helmet, can reduce the risk of serious injury and help ensure you make it home to see another adventure," read the OPP release.

CAA says criminals are changing how they steal cars by targeting drivers directly in public parking lots.

The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) says criminals are changing how they steal cars by targeting drivers directly in public parking lots.

Director of Government Relations for CAA South Central Ontario Elliott Silverstein said thieves are now combining distraction tactics with the use of high-tech signal-stealing tools.

He said this comes amid a 22 per cent decline in Ontario vehicle thefts in 2025 compared to the previous year.

That's according to stats from the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

"Some of the efforts we've been putting in have been resulting in some reduced amounts of theft," said Silverstein. "There are tools that are out there that are used for other types of work that can be used illegally to try and gain access to somebody's radio frequency from their key fob. But the requirement is that you have to be at a close range in order to grab that frequency. That's why we've sent out this this reminder, to tell everybody to be vigilant and that if something really doesn't seem natural or authentic, to be mindful of your scene, mindful of your surroundings and get to safety."

Silverstein said it only takes a few seconds for a thief to gain access to a vulnerable key fob.

"Perhaps the suspect says they're lost or they're not sure which direction they should be heading in as you're parking your car on a street in certain areas," he said. "It really only takes a few seconds for a thief to gain access to a vulnerable key fob. Moments after that, if you're in a parking lot at a shopping centre and you're going in to get a couple of things or going to visit a friend, you leave your car locked and unattended. If they've been able to get access to that key fob, they can certainly try and access your car after that."

Silverstein said the CAA has been trying to push the federal government to update some of the standards to try and protect vehicles down the road.

"Going back to the summit they held two years ago in Ottawa to talk about vehicle theft, which was really the epicentre of where we've seen some of the changes that have come about, they began to make those commitments to updating vehicle standards and they still continue to work towards that," said Silverstein. "The challenge is that they have not been updated in nearly two decades and that some of these changes are on the horizon, but they've yet to come into effect. Every day that passes is another risk for people to be vulnerable to these types of tactics. And the more that we can update standards, update vehicles, make it harder to steal vehicles, the safer we're going to be all across the province."

Silverstein said it's crucial to lock your vehicle the moment you get out and keep your keys securely on your person instead of leaving them in shopping carts or purses.

Residents are encouraged to store their key fobs inside RFID-blocking Faraday pouches to stop wireless signal interception entirely.

For added security, drivers should use physical steering wheel locks, install aftermarket engine immobilizers, and wipe saved home addresses from their in-car GPS units.

According to the Northern Tornadoes Project), there have been six tornadoes in the region so far this year.

If you've been thinking there have been more tornadoes than usual across southwestern Ontario this year, you would be right.

According to the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), there have been six tornadoes in the region, with the most recent happening Thursday near Glencoe. Since the NTP began in 2017, the area has seen around six tornadoes per year, with 2023 seeing the most with nine.

"I have a feeling we'll be over the normal number of tornadoes this year," said Dr. David Sills, Director of the NTP.

It's impossible to pinpoint one specific reason for the increase this year. Sills explained that one reason the area sees multiple tornadoes every year is its proximity to the U.S. He added that there isn't enough research to suggest that climate change is playing a major role.

"No one's really tied it to climate change directly yet, but it certainly fits with a lot of what we're seeing with other aspects of climate change, like more droughts and forest fires," said Sills.

One thing people have been noticing more of are alerts. Sills said the NTP recommended that Environment Canada increase the number of tornado watches and warnings.

"I think people would appreciate getting that warning before a tornado happens, rather than not having a warning at all," he explained.

Sills thinks the warnings are a big reason why many people caught on to how many tornadoes have happened this year.

Another thing about these tornadoes that's caught Sill's attention is their size. Each is measured on the Fujita scale from zero to five, with the most severe at the higher end. None of the tornadoes since 2017 have surpassed one, with the last to be ranked as a two happening in 2016 in Windsor.

Even though the recent tornadoes are low on the severity scale, Sills said anyone who doesn't take them seriously could be in for a lot of trouble.

"[Once in St. Thomas] there was a stack of wood in front of this restaurant, and it took one of the 2x4s and sent it through the wall of the restaurant," he shared.

Sills added that these tornadoes, while perhaps not deadly, can cause significant damage.

Summer is officially here, and the kids are out of school, so more people are expected to cross the border.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) anticipates an increase in cross-border travel starting this weekend.

"Knowing what you need to enter Canada will help ensure a smoother border crossing experience and give CBSA officers more time to focus on stopping dangerous goods and inadmissible people," read a release from the CBSA.

The CBSA has offered a series of tips and helpful hints to make crossing the border during the summer less of a hassle.

The CBSA says crossing when the border isn't busy, such as early morning or late at night, is a good first step. Southwestern Ontario residents also have the luxury of multiple crossing options, such as the Ambassador Bridge and Windsor-Detroit Tunnel in Windsor, and the Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia.

The CBSA has a real-time webpage showing wait times.

When you approach the inspection booth, be sure to have your travel documents, including passports, permanent residency cards, and receipts, ready.

If you are travelling with children who aren't yours or for whom you do not have legal custody, be sure to bring a letter from the custodial parent that authorizes travel. CBSA agents are trained to watch for missing children.

For purchases made outside of Canada, be ready to declare any items. If you aren't sure what's allowed and what's not, ask. The CBSA also urges shoppers to be aware of exemptions.

Prohibited weapons or firearms are not permitted at the border.

Recreational cannabis may be legal in both Canada and the State of Michigan, but you may not bring marijuana products for recreational use across the border, regardless of the presence of CBD, THC, or not.

If you must have it for medical purposes, you must carry a valid permit or exemption from Health Canada. A doctor's prescription will not be accepted.

Smuggling cannabis over the border is a crime. Penalties are severe and may include a ban against crossing and serious criminal charges.

Be sure to review the up-to-date list of any prohibited or restricted goods to avoid delays, seizures, or fines.

Information for cross-border travellers can be found on the official CBSA website.

Organizers of a monthly protest are drawing attention to what they call questionable behavior and actions by Ontario's premier.

Since February, the peaceful "Fighting Doug Ford Protest" has been taking place on the last Saturday of the month, and has now made its way to more than 60 cities.

June's edition is scheduled for Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. outside of Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey's office at 805 Christina St. N.

Spokesperson Lorrie Hodgin said there have been numerous controversies surrounding Ford and the public needs to be made aware.

She said Ford makes unilateral decisions without involving people.

"To start off, it was the spa on the waterfront in Toronto. The taxpayers are paying for the parking, which is $140 million, I think," said Hodgin. "He started with the $29 million jet. Because there was so much upset, he reneged on it. But what was not said at the time, only 10 per cent of the airports in Ontario could accommodate that jet. The Billy Bishop Airport is owned by JP Morgan in New York. And of course, they would like it expanded. But it will impact on all the people around it, and the plane's coming in and out because of the noise."

Hodgin said the main goal is to apprise everyone of the issues.

"We recognize too that he has three years left. And if there is enough public protest, obviously things have to change. The classic example just last week was when the Angus Reid poll came out, and he was at 21 per cent. And he sounded so Trump-like by saying, fake, fake. And of course, Angus Reid sent a letter to him saying, oh no, sir, it was real."

She's also concerned about changes to the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, which she said make it more difficult for journalists and the public to get details on certain things.

Documents, emails, text messages, and phone records held directly by the premier's office, cabinet ministers, parliamentary assistants, and their political staff are completely exempt from FOI requests.

The statutory deadline for government institutions to respond to an FOI request was extended from 30 calendar days to 45 business days.

Other issues include healthcare, the sale of LifeLabs to a US enterprise, education cuts, and the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act (Bill 60).

The sweeping legislation passed in late 2025 amends 16 laws, primarily altering transit, housing, and tenant regulations.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, a Minister of Health spokesperson said OHIP-insured laboratory services remain publicly funded and are completed in Ontario.

"Our government is making record investments in our healthcare system including in laboratory services and expanding the health-care workforce - investments the NDP have continuously voted against," read the email. "Through programs such as the Learn and Stay Grant, which has already supported nearly 3,800 students, we are also growing and strengthening Ontario's pipeline of highly skilled medical laboratory technologists. We will continue to deliver more connected, convenient care in every corner of the province, always ensuring that people are accessing the health care they need with their OHIP card, never their credit card."

The Ministry of Transportation also provided the following statement regarding the Billy Bishop Bridge.

"Our government is supporting the long-term modernization and expansion of Billy Bishop Airport which is a critical and underutilized part of Ontario's transportation infrastructure," read an email. "The economic benefit to Ontario in expanding Billy Bishop Airport is too important to not move forward."

It said the first step in the plan is completing the expropriation of the city’s portion of the land, a process we recently took a critical step toward by passing legislation.

"Once the expropriation is complete, we will continue to work closely with the Toronto Port Authority and the Federal government to advance this critical project. We look forward to working with all partners in the tripartite agreement on the Billy Bishop Airport expansion project that will strengthen our economy, contributing up to $8.5 billion to Canada’s economy every year, create thousands of jobs, and make it easier for millions of travelers and businesses to get around Ontario, North America and beyond."

The union representing custodial staff on the Canadian side of the Blue Water Bridge (BWB) is sounding the alarm after 10 workers were abruptly let go.

In a news release, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) said the staff were "suddenly terminated and escorted off the property" on June 15.

President of PSAC DCL 501 Matt Delaroche said the Federal Bridge Corporation (FBCL) signed a contract with GDI Integrated Facility Services to contract out the entire custodial department.

He said GDI immediately had their contract workers on site the next day to take over operations.

“Imagine having 20 years of dedicated service and one day your manager sits you down and fires you on the spot and you’re given 10 minutes to leave the building,” said Delaroche. “That’s the disgusting way these workers have been treated and the ruthless way this was done.”

PSAC Ontario Regional Executive Vice-President Craig Reynolds is calling on political leaders, including MP Marilyn Gladu, MPP Bob Bailey, Mayor Mike Bradley, Mayor Bev Hand, and Councillor Brian White to intervene and help keep good jobs in the community.

"At a time when workers and families are already facing rising costs and economic uncertainty, job security has never been more important," he said. "These workers didn't lose their jobs because the work disappeared. They lost them because FBCL chose to contract work out without consultation with the union and the affected employees. That should concern every worker who depends on secure employment."

In an email to Sarnia News Today, the FBCL said it was "strategic decision."

“This operational change is designed to focus our resources on our core public mandate—the operation, maintenance and stewardship of our international bridge infrastructure—while ensuring the highest standards of reliable, continuous service delivery at this critical border crossing," read the statement. "FBCL recognizes that any workplace transition is a significant adjustment, and we are deeply grateful to our custodial staff for their years of dedicated service."

The FBCL said it was "committed to supporting the employees far beyond statutory requirements."

"In implementing this transition, FBCL worked within the framework of the collective agreement. Following an internal meeting 100 per cent voluntary resolution was achieved, with all employees accepting an enhanced, voluntary separation package. Notably, 50 per cent of the transitioning employees chose to retire directly, supported by lifetime, 100 per cent employer-paid health and dental benefits."

The FBCL said there will be no disruption of cleaning services at the bridge.

It will "initiate a formal, competitive procurement process in the coming months to establish a longer-term service agreement."

We're in severe thunderstorm season, and power outages are always possible.

That's where amateur radio comes in handy as operators can rely on other methods to keep them on the air and communicating with one another.

The capabilities of ham radio will be showcased this weekend during the annual Amateur Radio Field Day.

Members of the Lambton County Radio Club (LCRC) will be participating in the national exercise on Saturday and Sunday at Krall Park in Enniskillen Twp.

They'll be there from 2 p.m. Saturday until 5 p.m. on Sunday and the public is welcome to come out to ask questions and learn about the equipment.

LCRC President Chuck Chivers said field day has been a tradition in North America since 1933.

"We set up our antennas and our radios and we run them on alternate power whether it be solar or generators or anything like that, but not the regular hydro because we are simulating an emergency situation," said Chivers. "So we have to erect antennas and we have to set up our equipment and contact whoever we can for 24 hours straight. It's basically to test our resiliency in times of emergency."

Chivers said ham radio can help people learn about things like electronics, meteorology, and physics.

"Some would say it's kind of a geeky hobby, but you learn to problem-solve and figure things out on your own and it teaches you resiliency for one thing," he said. "Space weather too is one of the things you learn about because if the sun isn't cooperating and it's throwing stuff at us and our radio waves aren't going to propagate like we want them to."

Currently, there are over 70,000 licensed Amateur Radio Operators in Canada, and more than 2.5 million worldwide.

Over 45,000 people from thousands of locations in North America participated in Field Day in 2024.

SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash said the decision followed discussions with Acting Chief Mike Federico and aligns with practices at other police services.

The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) has disabled comments on its social media posts due to online toxicity.

SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash said the decision followed discussions with Acting Chief Mike Federico and aligns with practices at other police services.

"It became particularly problematic, I think, when we made an arrest and we identified the individual," Federico said to Sarnia News Today. "The social commentary came back, [a wide] range of personal opinions and editorial comment, not based on fact, not even based on the reason why the posting was made. It was just sometimes, cruel, mean or toxic, and it served no purpose."

Federico said the move to turn off comments is not an indictment of the original intention, which was to welcome feedback and encourage dialogue with the SPS.

"But it ended up getting distracted. This is, I think, one of the social phenomena we're experiencing around social media," he said "We will provide information to the community, we will explain why we're providing that information; sometimes it is to solicit further information, but we'll receive that information in a much more manageable way that doesn't personally expose people or create some sort of upset or insecurity."

City/County Councillor and SPS board member Chrissy McRoberts said the comments section on Facebook became "unruly."

However, she emphasized that disabling comments won't impact transparency, as the public can still reach the service or board by phone, email, or through their online tip portal.

The discussion was held during Federico's first SPS board meeting on June 25.

Federico said he has received a warm welcome from community members as well as those within the service.

"I was requested to come here and there's always some anxiety... that people may not feel particularly secure, given that reviews are ongoing. I want to make sure that people do feel secure and confident that they can carry out their jobs," he said. "The service board has great confidence and faith in the membership and in the way the membership is carrying out their duties."

Federico said he's looking forward to seeing how services are delivered, in terms of primary response, and interactions with support services and community outreach.

Next week, Federico will be joining patrol officers on a ride-along. He's also been invited to participate in the upcoming Canada Day celebration, to visit Aamjiwnaang First Nation, and meet with local organizations like Sarnia-Lambton Rebound.

"My undertaking is to make the personal investment, and what I'm asking people to do for me is invest their time confidently, that it'll pay off. I'm not here in some transitory way or just marking time," he said. "I'm here to make the investments the community wants the service to make, and I'm hoping people will feel that the time they spend with me is worth their while."

Federico stepped into the role in mid-June amid an ongoing workplace investigation involving Chief Derek Davis, Deputy Police Chief Ron Hansen and a civilian member of the service.

Those details will be included in the Strategic Business Plan.

During Thursday's meeting, the board approved an extension to the 2023-2025 business plan to include 2026.

Deputy Chief Michael Van Sickle said the service is not in a position to finalize a new business plan.

"This is an opportunity for us to do some reevaluation of where we want to go. Obviously, the building project, which was a forefront of the organization for a while, has had its challenges. That's something we need to address. To prepare a strategic business plan now, I think, would be a disservice to the potential of a new board."

<img src="https://media.mynewstoday.ca/i/29JK17q4/740" alt="Deputy Chief Michael Van Sickle during the SPS board meeting on June 25, 2026. For example, the city will not be in a position to finalize a budget for the service until a new council is sworn in, emerging pressures were not fully known when the two-year estimate was submitted, and ongoing collective agreement negotiations may impact the budget.

The company will continue to assess future opportunities for the riverside site in alignment with system needs," Atura Power added.

St. Clair Township Mayor Jeff Agar reacted to the decision last week.

"I would like to give a recent update on information about the Riverside Generating Station 500 megawatt, 2 billion dollar Atura proposed build on the vacant OPG (Ontario Power Generation) site in St. Clair," Agar wrote in a Facebook post. "The proposal has been turned down by the IESO board in Toronto. I would like to give my sincere thanks to the Atura team, our St. Clair staff and council for the many hours that have been put into this proposal. I have been pursuing a use for this site for many years."

Agar said tax dollars, good paying jobs and spinoff work are lost as a result of the decision.

"In my mind, it was a good time for our provincial government to make it right after the previous government shut down our coal-fired plant," Agar said. "I am very disappointed that a few board members of the IESO said no to this project. They most likely do not have an idea of where St. Clair Township is located."

According to Agar, Atura wasn't the only rejected proposal.

"We had two more gas expansions and a battery storage that our council has supported with a municipal support resolution. These were also turned down. The three that were approved were two battery storage projects near Toronto and one in Kenora," Agar said.

Agar said he approached a minister in Toronto three years ago and said the municipality would purchase the former LGS property and open it up to business if there were no plans for it.

He said he plans to keep fighting to bring the former OPG site back to life.

Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries Sam Oosterhoff announced on June 12 in London, the province had secured 640 megawatts (MW) of new electricity capacity through three selected projects under the capacity stream of the Second Long-Term Request for Proposals (LT2).

These projects were awarded 20-year contracts, with commercial operations expected to begin by May 1, 2030.

With additional procurement rounds still expected, Oosterhoff said they were going to "keep that momentum going" by advancing "the largest energy expansion plans in our history."

"New nuclear, new transmission infrastructure, new energy efficiency programs, putting money back into the pockets of hard working families and investments in emerging clean energy technologies," Oosterhoff said.

So that means we're going to have a long, hot summer here of more truck traffic and perhaps more car traffic," Bradley said. "I hope the province has really taken a good look at that part, from Colborne out to Modeland, where increasing the speed significantly, given the history of that stretch of highway, may not be a good thing to do."

However, Bradley admits many drivers don't abide by the current speed limit anyways.

"Anyone that drives the highway can understand that," he said. "I think the one concern would be that there have been a number of major traffic accidents in this particular stretch between Colborne and Modeland, and I hope that they (the province) have done their diligence on what the impact of this will be."

Bradley said in the past, there have been inconsistencies with speed limits between the Blue Water Bridge and Modeland Road, making it confusing for drivers.

"Trying to bring in some consistency is good, I just hope they've taken a really good look at the safety issues," Bradley said.

Currently, the speed limit on the westbound Highway 402 at Indian Road is 70 km/h approaching the international border crossing. The speed limit increase on Highway 402 follows a previous boost in 2022 from Waterworks Road to London, following a three-year pilot project.

With files from Natalia Vega.

Members of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent's administration held an information session where they answered questions and outlined all efforts to stop the project.

Much of the optimism many had about an upcoming court battle against the proposed Dresden Landfill was lost during a recent public meeting.

Members of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent's (CK) administration held an information session on Wednesday, June 24, answering residents' questions and outlining all efforts to stop the project.

All questions were submitted before the session, with staff explaining that many focused on the planned court hearing in September. The municipality argues that York1 Environmental Waste Solutions, which is seeking to construct the landfill, needs land-use planning approvals. The company believes it doesn't, since the property was previously used as a dump.

Emily Crawford, the Director of Legal Services for CK, said it could take months to reach a decision after the hearing.

She added that even if they were to win, York1 would still have other avenues to get the project approved. This includes going through CK's council and appealing any decision with the Ontario Land Tribunal.

What sucked the air out of the room was a comment from Crawford, who claimed the province can simply bypass the municipality whenever it wants through a Minister Zoning Order.

Councillor Rhonda Jubenville, whose Ward includes Dresden, told CK News Today she understands that the information shared wasn't what many people wanted to hear, but sitting down and just accepting the loss isn't an option.

"If we just give up and say we're going to lose, then it's an easy battle [for York1]. If we keep proposing roadblocks and going through all the processes, it's gonna be a little more difficult for them," she added.

Another piece of information that didn't sit well with the crowd came from a traffic study done by York1. According to the municipality's administration, all traffic to the landfill would avoid going directly through Dresden, but would go through the nearby communities of Thamesville and Kent Bridge.

"It almost makes me think, did they purposely avoid going through Dresden to appease the people in Dresden, and aren't worried about the people in Thamesville and Kent Bridge," added Jubenville.

Also shared at the meeting was that the municipality has spent around $125,000 fighting the project. A lot of this money has been spent on legal experts.

Chairman of Dresden Citizens Against Reckless Environmental Disposal (Dresden C.A.R.E.D.) Rob Simpson, has no issue with the costs. He hasn't been a fan of York1's efforts to get the project approved, so any money spent fighting back is well spent.

"York1 came in and slapped a lawsuit on Chatham-Kent before they sat down for real. Walpole Island Chief Leela Thomas said [York1] said basically, we don't have to talk to you," he added.

The municipality's administration ended the meeting by assuring the public that it would provide updates whenever they get new information.

Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers is expanding its community sign initiative to St. Clair Township.

The organization has received approval to place its signage, which includes information on how to submit tips anonymously, across the municipality.

Board Member Laurissa Ellsworth told council it's designed to promote public safety, encourage community engagement, and remind residents they can play an important part in preventing and solving crimes while staying anonymous.

"We know that crime affects us all," said Ellsworth. "Whether it's drug related activities, vandalism, theft, property crime, or other behaviour... the impacts extend beyond the immediate victim. Crime affects families, businesses, neighbourhoods, schools, and ultimately the quality of life of a community."

Ellsworth said many people have information that could help police investigations, but are reluctant to come forward because they fear retaliation, being involved in court proceedings, or being identified.

"Crime Stoppers exists to remove those barriers," Ellsworth said. "For more than four decades, Crime Stoppers programs across Canada have provided citizens with a safe and anonymous way to share information about criminal activities. Individuals submit information without revealing their identity, and that information is forwarded to law enforcement for investigation."

Ellsworth said in some cases, tips contributing to an arrest or resolution of a case are eligible for a cash reward.

"Our message is simple, if you know something, say something anonymously," she said.

The signs will be placed in highly visible locations throughout the community, including municipal entrances, community centres, parks, and recreation facilities where residents and visitors regularly gather.

"Crime prevention is most effective when communities and law enforcement work together," Ellsworth said. "Municipal governments, police services, community organizations, businesses, schools and residents all have a role to play. The community sign initiative is a simple and cost effective way to strengthen that partnership and keep the message of community safety visible year round."

Crime Stoppers launched its sign project in May in Petrolia.

They are filling stadiums and venues all over Canada," said Marcy-Smids. "We also have on that night, The Hip Machine, Twang Bastards and Livewire. Saturday night, we have secured 54-40, the Cory James Mitchell Band, we have Little White Lies and we have Boneyard. It's an all-Canadian weekend. There'll be food, fun, there'll be activities for the kids."

Throughout the weekend, guests can also enjoy traditional Bavarian-inspired cuisine, festival favourites, local beverages, and Oktoberfest-themed experiences.

Marcy-Smits said they're hoping to raise $80,000, noting the agency is only 48 per cent funded by the Ministry of Health.

"Any of the money raised stays in Sarnia-Lambton to support the families that need us at a critical time because most people, when they arrive at our doorstep, are in crisis," she said. "The amount of people affected in Sarnia-Lambton, with care partners included, is about 10,500. That's a lot of people for our population. We are an aging population and the services that we provide and the support we give is probably just going to only become more prevalent over the next 10 years."

Marcy-Smids said he excitement is building, and she's thankful for the support from the Revelree team.

"They wholeheartedly dove in to help us out with this," said Marcy-Smids. "They are handling all the negotiations with bands and they'll be handling the setup of that end of it and then we are doing the rest of it. So it's a good partnership for us. Our hope is that it could become an annual event."

Marcy-Smids is hoping Rocktoberfest will help fill the void left by Revelree and Borderfest not taking place in 2026.

"We don't have anything locally in an Oktoberfest kind of theme," she said. "We have the Brigden Fair, which is the following weekend, but other than that, we don't. So we thought this was the perfect event to provide to the community when there isn't anything else."

Tickets can be purchased on Revelree's website.

The presale prices, starting at $54.40, are in effect until July 9.

Fundraising for the Brights Grove Library Expansion project is off to a booming start.

Community members and members of the Brights Grove Library Committee (BGLC) gathered Tuesday at the library for the announcement of the official start of the campaign.

"I've doubted it numerous times over the five years that I've been involved, but the donors who have come to us without us even asking have put so much wind in both our sails to stay the course and fight for this, and it is going to be amazing when it is built. People are going to love this," said Mark Moran, co-chair of the Brights Grove Library Committee.

The gathering was not only to celebrate those who have already donated but to officially launch the community fundraising campaign for the project.

"We're at $735,000 now, pledged of a $1 million campaign, not that we can't go over that, and we haven't asked anyone for money, except for one group, three weeks ago, because we haven't really had that opportunity and that wherewithal to do that yet. Now we can, and we're eager to get started," said Moran.

Groups that have already donated include the Huron Grove Foundation, the Sue Park Foundation, and the Norman and Judith Alix Foundation. During Tuesday's event the Brights Grove Optimist Club announced a donation of $50,000.

The library expansion project has been in the works for many years and will include renovations to the current building as well as an over 7,000 square foot addition.

"The building expansion project was driven by the community's desire for a modern and accessible public building right here in Brights Grove that would continue to provide access to valued traditional library service, but will now also be able to provide new services," said Manager of Library Services, Darlene Coke. "Libraries across the globe have moved away from places that simply hold books to places where people meet, where people use technology that they learn through play, or that they can access other government or community resources, like help with job searching, or the ability to access online appointments with medical professionals, educational institutions, or other professional services."

Other improvements include accessible washrooms, a chair lift, improved operational spaces and moving the gallery space currently on the second floor to the main level.

There is no official timeline for construction, but the BGLC hopes to have shovels in the ground by the end of the year.

Sarnia City Council approved the Brights Grove Library fundraising framework and associated donation recognition agreements during a recent council meeting in an 8-1 vote, with opposition from Councillor Terry Burrell.

The executive director of the Sarnia and District Humane Society says the recent community support to purchase a parcel of land at Centennial Park for a proposed expansion has been "overwhelming."

The executive director of the Sarnia and District Humane Society says the recent community support to purchase a parcel of land at Centennial Park for a proposed expansion has been "overwhelming."

In a unanimous decision, city council declared 2.14 acres of land as surplus during Monday's meeting.

Mayor Mike Bradley's motion to give the humane society first right of refusal passed in an 8-1 vote, with an amendment from City/County Councillor Chrissy McRoberts for the city to have first right of refusal should the humane society purchase the land and later decide to sell.

Councillor Terry Burrell voted against the motion.

"If they want to buy it, they should buy it. And if they don't want to buy it, they should not buy it. But the first right of refusal situation really just spoils the value of the property," Burrell said. "It's not a good idea, in my opinion."

City/County Councillor Bill Dennis' amendment to immediately transfer the land to the humane society at cost did not receive support.

City staff said a public notice regarding the parkland will be posted for 21 days, and they will seek council direction during the July meeting to solicit expressions of interest for about six to eight weeks.

Sarnia and District Humane Society Board Chair Bob Farlow said Monday's decision is "a big positive" for them as design plans for the proposed expansion are already done.

The humane society has been looking to expand for about six years, but previous plans fell through.

Executive Director Donna Pyette said once purchasing details are finalized, the plan is to move forward with a capital campaign.

"The design is already done, from being done years ago, not much has changed. It's just a better environment for the animals in our care with indoor/outdoor [spaces], a maternity ward for mums and pups and kittens and cats," Pyette said. "Of course, the affordable veterinary clinic will be a big one to continue to help our community."

Design plans will soon be posted on a dedicated web page and shared over social media," Pyette said.

Over the past week, there has been an outpouring of support over social media for the humane society's plans.

"We've always had really good support from the community but to see it in those numbers was jaw-dropping for a lot of us, very emotional for staff at the shelter," Pyette said. "They feel the stress every day of working in an environment that's just not quite big enough and we have to always be making compromises."

To make more space for the animals, Pyette said the last three offices were recently moved out into a trailer.

"Just knowing that people are out there and supporting them (staff), gives them a lot of hope that we need," Pyette said. "Your hope gets diminished when you have to keep going through these things over the last six years."

The humane society currently has a lease agreement with the city for $1 per year for its Exmouth Street building.

"These items will make such a difference to the patients on the Cognitively Complex Care Unit. What a wonderful example of kindness in action!”

Hospital staff said an existing raised garden bed had offered patients an opportunity to socialize and perform tasks, so the addition of three more boxes will provide more individuals with the chance to garden.

"These opportunities promote purpose, engagement, dignity, and connection, while creating a welcoming environment for patients and families to enjoy together,” said Bluewater Health Director of Rehabilitation Services, Stroke, Geriatrics and Rural Health Paula Gilmore.

The LKDSB said the project also provided students with the opportunity to apply their skills and give back to the community.

Plenty of scoffs could be heard in council chambers on Monday as city council approved planning amendments for a controversial affordable housing development on Cathcart Boulevard.

Official plan and zoning by-law amendments for a four-storey, 94-unit apartment building at the former St. Bartholomew's Church passed in an 8-1 vote.

City/County Councillor Bill Dennis voted against the recommendation, citing resident concerns about safety and community impact.

"Given the other situations we have in Sarnia regarding county housing projects and neighbourhood trauma, these concerns are very, very real to some neighbours," Dennis said. "They deserve more than vague assurances that everything will be fine, without clear answers, without clear eligibility criteria, without a neighbourhood protection plan, without endorsable accountability measures if problems arise."

During the meeting, County of Lambton Housing Manager Melisa Johnson reiterated the county's decision in March.

"Council did declare the use of that property as RGI, rent-geared-to-income housing, and not supportive housing. The intended use is to operate just like Jubilee Gardens is currently," Johnson said.

Councillor Terry Burrell said he supported the motion, taking the county at its word.

"We definitely need housing in our community for people with lower incomes," Burrell said. "There are many people who are paying $20,000 a year for their apartments."

However, longtime area resident Debbie Willis was not convinced by the county's statement.

During her delegation to city council, Willis accused the county of not giving area residents enough notice to attend February's public meetings.

"Cathcart neighbourhood property owners are deeply concerned with the lack of county transparency and how they want to transform our low-density neighbourhood to a high-density cluster build," Willis said.

She presented a petition with 211 signatures of neighbouring residents who are opposed to the proposed development.

"The issue isn't affordable housing. We have affordable housing there. The issue is high density -- number one -- is the big issue. Number two, there's nothing stopping the county from changing the designation," Willis said to local media outside of council chambers.

Council chambers during the June 22, 2026 meeting. (Photo by Natalia Vega)

Councillor Anne Marie Gillis noted during the meeting that it was a planning matter and not approving the recommendation could have opened the door for a larger build to take place.

"One of the problems I do have is I think even this is an overbuild on this site," Gillis said, who also noted concerns over the site's setback and lack of sidewalks on the north side of Cathcart Boulevard.

"I think the city has to take some ownership with its infrastructure when this goes in, or if it goes in," Gillis continued. "You have to have some place for people to walk, you have to have somewhere for people to ride their bikes, you have to have a decent transit system that will accommodate the number of people you have coming in here."

B.M. Ross & Associates Ltd. Planning Consultant Jordan Fohkens said the nine metre setback is much larger than what the city currently requires.

"Throughout this whole review, we were very cognoscent of the fact that we want to increase separation from the neighbours, more specifically the neighbours to the north," Fohkens said.

A site plan and detailed drawings will go back to the City of Sarnia to review at a later date, Fohkens said. Parking details (79 in total) will be subject to the site plan process. Parking will be shared with Jubilee Gardens, an existing 42-unit, two-storey apartment building on the Cathcart property (700-718 Cathcart Boulevard).
