Orchestra London To Be Evicted

As bankruptcy looms over Orchestra London, the organization is now facing eviction from its headquarters due to unpaid rent.

A notice, dated December 31, posted on the door of the Wellington St. building says the property must be vacated within five days. The notice says the eviction has been issued on the grounds that rent is 15 days overdue.

As of this summer, Orchestra London had a debt of $932,758, but was tracking towards ending the year with a small surplus. However, after a pledge donation of $350,000 fell through in December, the orchestra was forced to cancel all upcoming concerts.

The orchestra owes Centennial Hall, which is operated by the city, over $49,000 in unpaid rental fees. Around $215,000 is also owed to the musicians and $110,000 is owed to the Canada Revenue Agency.

In light of the orchestra's financial situation, Executive Director Joe Swan resigned his position.

On December 18, London's Strategic Priorities and Policy Committee voted against the organization's request for a $375,000 bailout.
