Be prepared to pay more if you get caught parking in a fire route, near a fire hydrant or in an accessible parking spot.
As of today, the city is increasing fines in those three specific areas.
The fine for parking in a fire route is going up from $80 to $100, the ticket for parking within 3m of a fire hydrant is increasing from $80 to $100, and it will now cost you $375 to park in an accessible parking space without a permit, a jump from the previous $350.
Manager of Municipal Law Enforcement Services Annette Drost says it is all in an effort to keep the city safe and more accessible.
"The rationale is to prohibit the activity, it's not a revenue maker. We'd actually like to see them decrease this year," Drost tells BlackburnNews.com. "For the most part people are in a rush anymore. They want to take a shortcut instead of having to parking and having to walk another 20 or 50ft. They want VIP parking."
In 2013, the city issued roughly 1,300 tickets to those parked in accessible parking spaces. In 2014, that jumped to over 1,475.
