Crackdown on loud rides ends with over 150 charges laid

Just because you dig the sound, doesn't mean others in London do.

A four-day crackdown on overly noisy vehicles in London saw more than 150 charges laid.

Between September 28 and October 1, London police stopped several vehicles with modified and/or excessively loud exhaust systems. Charges were laid 110 times for either having no muffler or having an improper muffler, 38 times for causing noise likely to disturb, and four times for vehicles operating with emissions control equipment removed.

Drivers facing the emission charges under the Environmental Protection Act have their licence plate seized and are required to have their vehicle repaired before they can get it back.

Police launched last week's traffic initiative in response to ongoing complaints from the public about loud vehicles. In order to avoid charges, drivers are advised to fix modified exhaust systems and avoid using devices to alter or increase the sound of their vehicle.
