A London man faces charges after allegedly fleeing from police and leaving behind a trail of destruction.
London police said a woman reported on October 6 that the license plates from her vehicle had been stolen. Around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, an officer spotted the stolen plates on a black Nissan Altima on Hamilton Road near Adelaide Street.
"The officer followed the vehicle eastbound on Hamilton Road, and as it turned northbound onto Chesley Avenue, he activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop," police said in a news release issued Friday. "The vehicle fled from the officer and turned onto a dead-end street. No pursuit was initiated."
According to police, the driver than drove over the centre island of Lisa Court and hit a tree. Other police cruisers arrived on the scene and an officer laid down a spike strip as the Nissan tried to escape. The driver hit a sign at the entrance of CNR Park, before driving through the park at what police say was a high rate of speed. The Nissan was last seen heading east on Pine Street.
Police continued to search for the vehicle and found it around 9:15 a.m. near the intersection of Oak and Trafalgar Streets. An arrest was made a short time later.
Nathan Reo Joly, 35, of London is charged with possession of property obtained by crime, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, failing to remain, and driving while under suspension.
He is to appear in court November 18.
