A pair of downtown crosswalks are going purple to raise awareness about men’s violence against women.
The London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC) has teamed up with the City of London to paint the pedestrian crosswalks at Richmond Street and Central Avenue and Dufferin Avenue and Clarence Street in support of the 11th Annual Shine the Light on Woman Abuse campaign.
"Purple is a symbol of courage, survival and honour, and has come to symbolize the fight to end woman abuse," LAWC said in a statement.
Shine the Light, a month-long, London-born initiative, casts a spotlight on the issue of men’s violence against women, honouring both a victim and a survivor of domestic abuse. As part of the campaign, dozens of buildings and monuments throughout the city, country, and internationally are illuminated in purple light throughout the month of November.
Painting of the first of the two crosswalks was to begin Sunday night, but was postponed due to rain. The work is being rescheduled with a new date expected to be shared as soon as possible.
