Dozens displaced by Strathroy apartment fire

A fire at a Strathroy apartment building sent a police officer to hospital and left dozens of other people temporarily without a home.

Fire crews were called to the four-storey building at 516 Albert St. after a fire broke out inside of a third-floor unit around 12:44 a.m. on Monday. All 32 units had to be evacuated.

Flames could be seen coming from the top of the building. It took firefighters, using an aerial ladder, several hours to extinguish the blaze.

No residents of the building were hurt, however, a police officer was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The officer has since been released.

The Canadian Red Cross has arranged for 15 residents to be temporarily sheltered at a local hotel. Other tenants displaced by the blaze have gone to stay with family or friends.

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate have not yet been determined.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified.
