Body of missing Toronto man found in London-area landfill

The body of a Toronto man, who went missing eight months ago, has been found in a landfill south of London.

Toronto police confirmed on Thursday investigators had found the remains of Nathaniel Brettell at the Green Lane Landfill in Southwold August 26. Police had been searching the dump for the 57-year-old man's body since July 5.

"The excavation involved multiple units from across the service including homicide, police dogs, emergency management and public order, and the public safety unit," police said in a statement.

Police have not commented on the state of the remains found, but said they used fingerprints to positively identify them.

Brettell had been missing since January 21. He was last seen inside the rooming house where he lived on Westona Street near Dixon Road in Etobicoke. On February 2, officers investigating his disappearance were attacked by a man with a butcher knife at the rooming house - one suffered serious non-life threatening injuries, the other had minor wounds. The man was charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Following that, Brettell's disappearance was ruled a homicide after investigators found his blood inside the home.

In May, Ahmed Al-Farkh, 34, of Toronto - the same man charged with attacking police - was arrested in charged with second degree murder in the case.
