UPDATE: SIU investigating following east London stabbing, man shot

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate after a 23-year-old man was reportedly shot by a London police officer early Sunday morning.

According to police, members responded to a disturbance call at approximately 1:20 a.m. at an apartment building in the area of Balfour Place and Trafalgar Street. When officers arrived, they found that two individuals had been stabbed.

Officers reportedly then located and arrested a man, who was said to be in possession of weapons. The two victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

London police have since charged the man with assault with a weapon and aggravated assault. He appeared in court on Monday to respond to the charges.

"There was an interaction, and one officer shot the man with a less-lethal firearm. Conducted energy weapons were also discharged at the man," the SIU said in a statement released on Monday. "The man sustained serious injuries not as a result of police-involvement however, the SIU’s mandate was invoked because a police officer discharged a less-lethal firearm, which is classified as a firearm."

Anyone with information about this incident before police involvement is asked to call the LPS at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
