Teen driver clocked doing more than twice the speed limit in St. Thomas

A 17-year-old will be walking for the next month after St. Thomas police stopped a vehicle travelling at twice the posted speed limit in the city.

Officers clocked a vehicle doing 121 kilometres/hour in a posted 50 kilometres/hour zone on Tuesday night.

The teen was charged with stunt driving and had their vehicle impounded for 14 days and licence suspended for 30 days. The individual also faces a minimum fine of $2,000.

Penalties for stunt driving were increased by the Ontario government last year. Those stopped for driving more than 40 km/h above the speed limit on roads with a limit of 80 km/h or lower or doing 50 km/h or more over the limit on all other roads are now hit with an automatic 30 day licence suspension and 14 day vehicle impoundment. That is up from a seven day licence suspension and one week vehicle impoundment.
