For a third month in a row, the jobless rate in the London area has gone up.
Figures released Friday by Statistics Canada show the unemployment rate in the London Census Metropolitan Area (which includes London, St. Thomas, Strathroy, and other surrounding communities) was 6.1 per cent in July. It was 5.8 per cent in June.
According to the federal agency, the London area added 100 jobs in July, after a loss of 1,600 in June.
The number of people considered unemployed went up by 1,100 last month.
Nationally, the jobless rate remained at its lowest level on record. The unemployment rate was 4.9 per cent in July, unchanged from June. The economy shed 31,000 jobs in a second straight month of job loss.
Ontario's unemployment rate hit 5.3 per cent in July as the province lost 27,000 jobs. June's jobless rate in Ontario was 5.1 per cent.
