TSN reporting about two sexual assault cases from four years ago has prompted London Police to review the investigation.
On Friday afternoon, London Police Chief Steve Williams issued a news release saying that police will be launching an internal review of that investigation.
"In September of 2019, the London Police Service investigated two allegations of sexual assault. The same complainant initiated both investigations. The allegations were in relation to incidents that took place in March of 2018. One investigation resulted in a sexual assault charge being laid. That charge went through the court process resulting in the issuance of a Peace Bond. Charges were not laid in relation to the other investigation," the release said.
"You’re going to take a peace bond and move on,’” the woman told TSN when discussing the outcome of the two cases. “This has shattered me. I've developed PTSD. I have nightmares. I don't trust anyone.”
London Police have been criticized for their handling of sexual assault cases before. A 2017 story in the Globe and Mail called 'Unfounded' profiled a woman who didn't have her case investigated. London Police said they would make changes to the way they investigate sexual assault cases after that story came out.
In 2018, a woman filed a lawsuit against Hockey Canada saying she was sexually assaulted by multiple members of the 2018 World Junior team after an event. Hockey Canada settled with the woman out of court and Police have since said they would re-open that investigation.
Hockey Canada's entire board of directors has resigned in the aftermath of that lawsuit becoming public, while President Scott Smith has also left the organization.
