Four from St. Thomas charged in violent assault at encampment

St. Thomas police have announced charges against a group relating to a violent assault that occurred at an encampment earlier this week. 

Sometime early Tuesday morning, officers were called to a known encampment located on a vacant piece of private property on Victor Drive for a disturbance. When police arrived, they located an individual with serious injuries. 

Investigators learned the victim living in the encampment had been severely beaten with a weapon. They were taken to hospital where they were later listed in stable condition. 

On Friday, police announced charges against four St. Thomas residents.

A 32-year-old woman is charged with robbery with violence.

A 38-year-old man is charged with robbery with a weapon and assault with a weapon.

A 36-year-old woman is charged with robbery with violence.

A 30-year-old man is charged with robbery with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. 

The incident led city officials and police to dismantle the encampment on Wednesday due to additional health and public safety reasons, however some individuals reportedly returned to the site within a day of it being removed. 

Three of the four suspects remain in police custody, while the 36-year-old has been released with a release order.

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
