The London Knights got the best of the OHL's top team Saturday afternoon.
Connor McMichael scored twice as the Knights beat the Ottawa 67s 5-3 before over nine thousand fans at Budweiser Gardens. The Knights are now with 61 points and are first in the OHL Midwest Division, now three points behind the 67s for the overall lead in the league.
McMichael's first goal was the only one of the first period, a power-play lamplighter at 4:29 to put the Knights up 1-0 after the first 20 minutes of play. McMichael scored again for London at 7:15 of the middle frame, but Ottawa got on the board when Sasha Chmelevski found the net a short time later, cutting the Knights' lead to 2-1.
Ottawa tied the game early in the third period on a Kyle Maksimovich score, but the Knights scored back-to-back goals to take the lead for good. Kevin Hancock scored his 34th of the season at 9:21, and Josh Nelson connected 44 seconds after. Sam Bitten pulled the 67s within one, but Liam Foudy sealed the win with a short-handed empty-net goal when 67s netminder Michael DiPietro was pulled.
Joseph Raaymakers stopped 22 shots out of 25 attempts in goal for London. DiPietro had 24 saves for Ottawa.
The Knights head to Kitchener Sunday afternoon.
