Perth County Paramedics Get Training Mannequins

Perth County paramedics are getting a new tool to help with their ongoing training.

A cheque for $5,000 was presented today to Perth County EMS to go toward a patient simulator. The grant was presented by Trillium Mutual and the Roots Community Fund.

Perth paramedics usually practice their medical skills on people who act out injuries or medical problems, and trainers verbally advise the paramedics if vital signs change.

The new computerized mannequins can be programmed to play out a medical emergency and respond to treatments by the paramedics. The mannequin will improve or deteriorate depending on what treatment they are given, and what they are programmed to do.

Training officer for Perth County EMS Chris Keyser says "having a patient simulator mannequin that can actually breathe, has a heartbeat and a blood pressure. Trainers will be able to change the vital signs on the mannequin that will bring real life medical emergencies to our paramedics in a safe training environment that they can learn on."
