Friends of the Saugeen Open House Next Week

The Saugeen River is bringing more people and groups together.

The Municipality of Brockton coordinated meetings with several interest groups a few months ago to discuss the health of the Saugeen River. They wanted to establish a network similar to the 'Friends of the Grand', established in the Grand River watershed.

The goal of the network would be to implement programs aimed at improving the quality of the Saugeen River. Improvements would include habitat rehabilitation, education, clean-up operations, and signage.

In order to gauge interest in the 'Friends of the Saugeen' initiative, there will be an Open House at the Jubilee Hall in Walkerton on Thursday, June 25th at 7:00pm.

Residents and businesses with an interest in the health of the Saugeen River are encouraged to attend.

The Chair of the SVCA, Luke Charbonneau, says “It’s all about working together to make good things happen. This river is the link that ties all of us together in this watershed from the headwaters in the Osprey Wetlands to the mouth of the river in Southampton. We all live downstream and we can’t forget that", he concluded.

Bruce Davidson, Chair of the Grey Bruce Sustainability Network, feels the same. "This is a large river system and it needs a coordinated effort to keep it healthy and sustainable. We can work together as a cohesive unit to make as much of a positive impact as possible".

Other groups associated with this initiative are the Lake Huron Fishing Club, the Walkerton Business Improvement Association, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Bruce County Tourism.
