High Water Continues in Midwestern Ontario Rivers and Tributaries

It's going to take several days for the levels in many local rivers and creeks to return to normal mid-June levels.

Significant rainfall through the weekend has many tributaries and rivers running high and fast, especially in the Maitland Valley, Upper Thames, and Ausable Bayfield watersheds.

Flows are expected to remain above normal summer levels for the next few days.

Monday afternoon, the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority extended its Watershed Conditions Statement first issued last week.

Over the past week the Maitland and Nine Mile watersheds received between 100 and 150 mm of rain.

That's approximately 1-and-a-half months worth of rain in just one week and some additional rain is forecast over the next few days.

The Authority notes that saturated soil conditions will result in this rainfall flowing quickly into streams and rivers.

There are reports of minor flooding in some low-lying areas along rivers.

Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are slippery, and when combined with fast-moving water - pose a serious hazard.
