Dangerous Giant Hogweed Spreading at Bayfield Bridge

Hikers and anglers are being warned to stay away from a patch of Giant Hogwood along the bank of the Bayfield River, below the bridge.

Hogweed plants have been there for a few years, but Bayfield Ward councillor Bill Whetstone says it has really spread this year.

Because it's just east of the bridge, it's a county matter.

Whetstone says the plants appear to have reached the point in their maturity where spraying will not get rid of them, so it's likely a county crew in special protective clothing will have to dig them out.

The sap of the Giant Hogweed reacts to sunlight and can cause an intense burn or blistering on the skin as well as temporary or even permanent blindness if it comes in contact with your eyes.
