The Blyth Business Improvement Area Board is calling on North Huron Council to look at the issue of bicycle safety following a tragic collision that left a local cyclist with a broken back.
41-year-old teacher Julie Sawchuck was riding on Huron County Rd. 25 when she was hit by a car and suffered serious, life altering injuries.
A letter to council from the BIA Chair Richard Elliot says accidents involving vehicles and bicycles are common place, but after an initial public outcry, the issue is often forgotten
The BIA wants the township to petition all municipal governments in the province to request all levels of government take action.
The BIA wants to see a comprehensive education program for motorists and cyclists. It also would like bike lanes to be a part of road construction or improvement.
Council will be asked Monday to request a report on the issue from the director of public works.
