Saugeen Shores Councillor Dave Myette withdrew his motion of support for the DGR project for low-and-intermediate level nuclear waste, announcing he would re-table the motion at council's February 27 meeting.
Saugeen Shores council's vote on supporting Ontario Power Generation's deep geologic repository has been delayed to allow for public participation.
Council had deferred Myette's original motion of support in February of last year and he says the motion was placed back on the table with little-or-no warning to the public.
Myette says he and other councillors had received messages of concern from members of the public because there was no advance warning to allow them to schedule delegations.
He says allowing public input is the right thing to do.
"It didn't seem fair to have [the motion] go through without giving them the chance to express themselves," says Myette.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is accepting public input until March 6 on the latest round of information supplied by Ontario Power Generation, who is proposing to permanently store nuclear waste nearly 700 m below the surface of the Bruce nuclear site.
