Huron County council is prepared to invest $7-million over seven years to fund a high speed internet project.
Council passed a motion in principle this week to support an application to the federal Connect to Innovate program put forward by Comcentric.
That plan is to build infrastructure connecting 98% of the county's population with high-speed fibre optic over a three-year period.
“Improving connectivity in Huron County is something we need to do,” says Warden Jim Ginn. “However, we cannot build broadband infrastructure alone and are calling on the federal government to partner with us.”
Comcentric is a cooperative of the local internet services providers.
The county money is needed to leverage federal investment.
Officials will work on a business plan as the application is due at the end of April.
