Huron Health Unit Urges Active Residents For Healthy Aging

The Huron County Health Unit urges residents to remain active as they age to prevent falls. November is fall prevention month, and the health unit has joined the Huron Perth Stepping Out Safely Network to encourage residents to try dancing as one way to maintain strength and balance. Public Health Promoter Alycia Kelly says Falls are the number one cause of injury in Huron County, and can lead to fractures, chronic pain or loss of independence. She says there are a variety of activities in Huron County to help residents stay active, but even some light dancing at home will do the trick. Just make sure to have good lighting and proper footwear, along with a clear place to dance

“Falls are not a normal part of aging and can be prevented. Staying active as you age maintains strength and balance, which helps prevent falls,” says Kelly, who is also co-chair of Huron-Perth Stepping Out Safely. “Dancing is a great way to stay active as well as meet new people and have fun.”
