The deputy mayor of Saugeen Shores is seeking to have the pride flag flown in the community later this year.
Luke Charbonneau introduced a notice of motion, seeking council's approval to have the rainbow flag flown in a public location during the first week of June, with the Saugeen Shores Police Service building as the preferred location.
Charbonneau says a number of residents have asked him why the municipality had never flown the pride flag when other neighbouring municipalities have done so in the past.
"Frankly, I had no good answer to that, so the only possible answer was that we need to [fly the flag]," says Charbonneau.
He says the idea is to send a message that Saugeen Shores is an inclusive community.
"A number of people who identify as LGBTQ live in our community and I think it's high time that we recognize those people and made it clear that we are indeed an open and welcoming community to them and everybody else," says Charbonneau.
Charbonneau's motion will be debated by Saugeen Shores council during the February 26 meeting.
