Midwestern Ontario in the deep freeze

It's going to be really cold in portions of midwestern Ontario this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the following regions:

  • Bruce Peninsula - Sauble Beach - Tobermory
  • Saugeen Shores - Kincardine - Southern Bruce County
  • Hanover - Dundalk - Southern Grey County
  • Owen Sound - Blue Mountains - Northern Grey County
  • Wingham - Blyth - Northern Huron County
  • Goderich - Bluewater - Southern Huron County
  • Listowel - Milverton - Northern Perth County
  • Stratford - Mitchell - Southern Perth County
The weather agency says the area will experience a period of very cold wind chills beginning late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, as an arctic air mass moves through southern Ontario. Wind chill values are expected to fall to near or a few degrees below minus-30 by early Sunday morning. Wind chills will remain near that temperature or below it throughout the day Sunday as bitterly cold northwest winds gust to 60 kilometres per hour and locally to 70 kilometres per hour.

Wind chills will fall to minus 35 or lower Sunday night as temperatures fall well into the minus twenties. Readings will moderate above the warning criteria of minus 30 later on Monday, but are still forecast to be near 25.

The cold snap will break on Tuesday when a milder air mass moves through the region.
