Bruce Power's Unit 1 has marked a full year of generating electricity, just four days after setting a new record run of 361 days of continuous operation.
The unit was returned to service in 2012 after the Bruce A station was shut down by the former Ontario Hydro in the 1990s. Unit 1’s previous record run of 360 days was from May 19, 1985, to May 14, 1986.
"This record run is a testament to our commitment to continuously improving efficiency and reliability at the Bruce Power site," said Len Clewett, Bruce Power’s chief nuclear officer. "It also demonstrates that Ontario’s nuclear fleet can be successfully refurbished to perform better than ever before."
Units 1 and 2 were returned to service in 2012. Units 3 and 4 were restarted in 2003 and 2004 and have performed at the highest levels since.
Units 3 and 4 are part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program and will undergo their own Major Component Replacement Projects from 2023-2028, adding about 30 years of life to the reactors.
