Huron County Warden says broadband plan needs more support

Huron County's Warden says there is a general consensus at the Western Wardens' Caucus that the funding they have for broadband won't get what's dubbed 'last mile' service to homes.

That includes Huron County.

Jim Ginn says they're looking for more funding and Provincial Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Steve Clark, has written a letter to the Federal government asking them to partner with the Province.

“The funding that we have for SWIFT will not get us last mile to every household in Huron County, or in any of the counties in Southwestern Ontario," said Ginn. "The Province has committed $315 million for rural broadband. So, from that meeting we passed a resolution saying that we supported Minister Clark and we sent that off to our M-Ps and M-P-P's and to the Federal minister that has letter was written to.”

Ginn says the Western Wardens support a SWIFT type model because they believe its cost-effective and it's working well in the three municipalities that are already using it.
