High water levels have resulted in some serious erosion problems along the Lake Huron shoreline this summer. But it was pointed out at a recent Huron Water Protection Steering Committee meeting, there is still no shortage of buyers for shoreline properties.
President of Zuzek Inc, a professional consultant for coastal regions, Peter Zuzek, says some areas can erode by two or three metres a year and even more when levels are as high as they are now. He adds, that can go even higher in a warmer winter like last year when there is no ice to protect the shore.
“So they take on a property that has beautiful views, access to the lake, all of the things they dream about, but they don't have enough understanding about the risks and the erosion rates and the flood rates to make informed decisions.”
Zuzek strongly recommends anyone considering purchasing a shoreline property talk to someone at the local conservation authority.
“Whether it be on a shoreline property or a riverine property they're very knowledgeable people, they're experts in this field locally and they know these shorelines and riverine systems and they would be well-positioned to help people gather more information and make informed decisions.”
