Warden updates county council on SWIFT broadband progress

Huron County Warden Jim Ginn told councillors at their last meeting that progress is being made on the SWIFT project to bring broadband service to all of Southwestern Ontario.

"We will have our Request For Proposal closed in Huron County in December and we can then issue RFPs to the proponents that have the best proposal," Ginn explained.

But Ginn added there is still more work to do on what they're calling SWIFT 2.0 and they're currently lobbying the federal and provincial governments for funding for that project. He said they have high-speed internet to about 90 per cent of rural Ontario

"[The] CRTC mandate is to be at 95 per cent by 2025, so we need to lobby the government now to get those dollars so that we can get fibre in the ground with what we can't cover with the original SWIFT project," said Ginn.
