Local horse racer Trevor Henry steered a locally trained horse to a big win at Mohawk Raceway recently.
Henry, an Arthur native, won the North America Cup race, the top race on the continent for 3-year-old colts with horse Desperate Man. Henry says he raced in a few other races that night and many over the years, but this horse had a little extra something.
"I forget where I finished in some of the other races, but yeah, I've driven in some big races and I'd driven in that race (the North America Cup) before, but never with a horse that had as good a chance as him."
The horse is owned by Nikki and Paul Davies along with Kathy and John Cecchin, who Henry says gifted the Davies the horse as a wedding gift. Henry is good friends with the families and says that made it very special to win the cup, especially with a locally trained and stabled horse.
"That was the biggest part of it is because it's local and I'm from Arthur, they're from here, we're great friends and it's nice to see a horse from here win it. Even a Canadian horse or an Ontario sired horse, it's even better."
The North America Cup carries a 1 million dollar prize for winning it.
