It appears that the Warden of Grey County is set to take another shot at provincial politics.
According to OntarioLiberal.ca, the party's riding association in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound will acclaim Selwyn Hicks as its candidate in a nomination meeting on Thursday, and seeking to claim a riding that has been left without an incumbent after current MPP Bill Walker of the Ontario PC Party announced that he will not seek re-election.
Hicks won a very close race to be named Warden for 2022. On December 7th, 2021, Hicks and West Grey Mayor Christine Robinson tied in an election for the Warden's chair. The county's process for resolving a tie in an election was to pull a name from a hat, and Hicks was successful.
The Deputy Mayor of Hanover also ran for the Liberals in 2007, taking 14.93% of the vote and finishing third. He also attempted to stand in the riding for the Ontario general election in 2011, but was defeated in the Liberal's nomination race by Kevin Eccles, himself a former Warden of Grey.
Taking just 12.3% of the vote in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound in 2018, the Liberals will be looking to flip a riding that has been blue since its creation in 1999 with Walker (2011-Present) and Bill Murdoch (1999-2011) representing the riding as Member of Provincial Parliament during that time.
2018 also marked the lowest number of votes (6,041) the Liberals have ever accumulated in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
