Salmon Spectacular is underway

The Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular is underway.

The 34th edition of the popular fishing derby officially opened up at midnight and will run through September 4th.

More than $150,000 in prizes are up for grabs, including for the heaviest salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout and lake trout caught.

2022 marks the return to a full event for the Spectacular, as the 2020 event was lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the 2021 event was scaled back.

Originally started back in 1988 by Syndenham Sportsmen, the derby has grown into an event that attracts thousands of anglers to a large event that includes lots of fishing, music, entertainment and family-friendly fun.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 60,000 people attended the Salmon Spectacular in 2019.

The weigh station is open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. Fish frys are being held from 4-8 p.m. each of the next two Saturdays.
