Central Huron's Deputy Mayor is running for Mayor in this month's election.
Dave Jewitt says he's been Deputy Mayor for three terms and he's running for Mayor because he wanted to give someone else a chance to run for Deputy Mayor and go to county council.
Jewitt says the rising inflation rate has just made it more difficult for most people to buy a house and believes council has to get creative.
“I think that council has to get creative in working with the developers to try and get affordable housing or attainable housing for the folks that are going to come here and work in our communities. We need to broaden the number of folks that live, not only in Central Huron, but in Huron County, because that can impact our tax base," Jewitt shared.
And he agrees with most people, they're not going to come into Central Huron or Huron County if there's no housing for them.
Jewitt says we need those people to move into their communities.
“We need folks to come in but we need to pay folks an appropriate wage and that's sometimes difficult for businesses that are owned by an individual because they have to manage their costs as well. We need to be able to create an environment where we can pay sustainable wages for folks so that they can get into the housing market and move to our community.”
Jewitt says another concern for him is the uncertainty at the Clinton Hospital and its Emergency Department and he hopes the Province will step in and resolve that issue.
