With six weeks to go in the annual campaign, United Way Perth-Huron (UWPH) has raised $1.91 million toward its $2.289 million goal.
The money helps United Way partner agencies as they tackle issues like poverty, homelessness, and mental health.
This year’s Stratford Coldest Night of the Year, which was co-hosted by Stratford-Perth Shelterlink, was one of the top fundraisers of the year. UWPH also hosts five other Coldest Night Events in St. Marys, North Perth, Exeter, Goderich, and Wingham to support of local people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.
Executive Director Ryan Erb called the milestone good news, especially since the economy is struggling and people are challenged to make ends meet as prices continue to rise. Erb is thankful to their donors who have given to the United Way. But Erb said they still need more donations. The United Way reports that 57 per cent of people in Huron and Perth Counties earn less than a living wage. This year’s living wage is set at $35,262 a year. Last year 1,018 people had to use the United Ways Urgent Needs fund to help with pressing financial needs.
