UPDATE: Hike for Huron Hospice back with new name

The annual hike for Huron Hospice is back, rebranded to honour its late hike leader. It is now called the June Robinson Memorial Hike for Huron Hospice.

Robinson passed away in 2022 and was always dedicated to the event.

"The reason the hike was so important to June was because it was a family event," said Christopher Walker, manager of fund development. "We really want everyone to think about the hike for Huron Hospice as a family event."

Walker said they will have activities for everyone, including a scavenger hunt for the kids. Local gyms will also be offering fitness challenges.

After the hike is finished, everyone is invited to a barbeque. Hamburgers and black bean burgers will be available, as well as fruit kabobs and protein snacks.

"Reaching out to support Huron Hospice on the hike helped to reinforce the connections that Grams cherished with her family and her community," said Robinson's granddaughters, Heather and Patricia. "It brought people together."

The money raised will go towards their essential day to day costs, including end of life care, nursing, and loss and grief support for loved ones.

"We can't provide this kind of care without the support of the community," said Walker. "The government provides close to 50 per cent of our revenue. We ask the community to come join us and provide the other 50 per cent."

The June Robinson Memorial Hike for Huron Hospice will be held May 28 at 10:30 a.m. The walk will be on Mavis Taylor Trail at the Stanley Community Centre in Varna. Hikers can form teams or participate on their own. Prizes will be given to the team and person who raise the most money.
