South Bruce OPP is urging locals to take a few easy precautions to avoid attracting black bears.
The bears will be looking for food sources, which could include trash or bird seed. The Municipality of Kincardine reported seeing a black bear on May 22, 2023.
When bears have minimal access to natural food, the likelihood of human bear conflict rises. This as black bears look for alternative food sources and may wander into populated areas.
Garbage should be placed in trash cans with tight-fitting lids and only put it out for collection on your designated collection day. Seed, suet and nectar attract bears. Pick fruits and berries as they ripen. Don't let them rot on the ground.
Clean outdoor barbecue grills after each use, including the grease trap underneath. Bears will be drawn by smells from great distances, including grease and food residue on grills.
Pet owners should keep dogs on a leash because sometimes bears will follow off-leash dogs back to you.
If a bear is posing an immediate threat to public safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behaviour, call 911 or your local police.
