SIU confirms man was shot by OPP officer in Seaforth

The Special Investigations Unit has confirmed that a suspect was shot by an OPP officer on the morning of October 18 in Seaforth.

According to a statement from the SIU, Huron County OPP officers were called regarding a stolen vehicle in Seaforth in the morning. Officers located the vehicle, and followed it in an unmarked police vehicle to a residence in Seaforth. Police approached the vehicle, and an altercation took place.

The SIU then states that during the incident, an officer discharged their firearm into the suspect vehicle, striking a 35-year-old suspect. The suspect vehicle drove off, and the victim was taken to the Clinton Public Hospital. The other suspect drove away in the vehicle and hit another vehicle, at which point the stolen vehicle was abandoned.

Police have confirmed that the man who suffered the gunshot wound from the OPP officer suffered serious injuries and was tended to by hospital staff. As a result, temporary "Hold and Secure" measures were put in place at Clinton schools and the hospital was in temporary lockdown. Both of those precautionary measures were lifted during the afternoon of October 18.

Four investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
